In an instant—everything changed.
I worked in banking and management for over 15 years. After the devastation of three layoffs, I knew working for someone else wasn’t an option. Entrepreneurship was always in the back of my mind, but the leap never felt attainable as a single mom of two children. But I had an unshakable feeling down to the very last cell in my body, which told me I had to follow my passions. I had no idea, in that moment, that my life would change forever. Or even more shockingly, how working in a different industry would introduce me to so many wonderful people.
The beauty industry is a unique genre. There is an outpouring of nurturing energy that pours from this group, and I fit right in. I had found my people! I saw the other side of the demands of beauty. The side where compassion resides in the hands of your hairstylist, esthetician, wax specialist, tanning specialist, nail, or lash technician. There is an unsaid unifying desire to make others feel their best. To offer services and perform them in such a way to make another feel the best version of themselves. Finding this group made my losses worth the gains.
It hasn’t been easy. In fact, it has been overwhelming at times. After the layoffs, I lost the home I purchased at 25 for my family. I depleted my 401k trying to survive and keep the house. I had to forfeit my car and eventually filed bankruptcy. I had to start over at no fault of my own. What I knew for sure was I had the fortitude and the courage to rebuild my life. I had the task of building my business from thin air. I had no prior entrepreneurship experience and no one to help me to navigate. The last 9 years of this beauty business endeavor has been bittersweet, and I am so grateful for the growth of soL deL souL tan. This journey has connected me with my community and nurtured lifelong friendships. I have been able to create a company, a brand, and most importantly, a culture I am proud of.
