Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sunless Spray Tanning?
Sunless spray tanning is the spray/mist application of sunless tanning solution to desired areas of your body. When applied, DHA (the active ingredient in sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a golden-brown color. Your skin begins to darken two to three hours after application and reaches its peak color within 24 hours. The color will gradually fade through natural exfoliation.
What is DHA?
The active ingredient most often used in all sunless tanners including tinted moisturizers, self-tanners, and spray tan solution is called DHA or dihydroxyacetone. DHA is a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. For misting applications, the FDA recommends protective measures to prevent eye contact, inhalation or ingestion. DHA is often derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. Its properties as a skin darkener were discovered in the 1920s but were not marketed as such until the 1960s, then added to the FDA’s list of approved colors for cosmetic products in the 1970s.
What is Ecocert Approved DHA?
There is a wide range in quality when it comes to ingredients and manufacturing in the skin care/cosmetic industry. Ecocert is an internationally recognized certification that guarantees the highest standards are met during the creation of formulas, manufacturing, filling and packaging. Ecocert was the very first certification to develop standards for natural and organic cosmetics. Ecocert approved DHA is the highest and finest quality of DHA available. Our inventory of different sunless spray tanning solutions all contain Ecocert approved DHA.
Has anyone ever had an allergic reaction to sunless spray tanning solution?
Yes. If you’ve had previous allergic reactions to self-tanning lotions or cosmetics, you should consult a health care professional before using spray tanning. An allergy patch test prior to an application/appointment can be requested.
Can I get a tan from the sun or a UV tanning bed with my spray tan?
Yes. Please be advised there is not SPF in any solution that we use. Solution does not contain sunscreen protection, so you should apply sunscreen accordingly. If you choose to expose your skin to UV rays either from the sun or a tanning bed, it is important to use a lotion with SPF to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.
How long does a spray tan last?
The tan lasts approximately 5-10 days (even longer for some), depending on a person’s activities, aftercare and condition of skin. The proper method of exfoliation prior to your spray tan application is the most important factor relating to your spray tan longevity. With follow up applications, a person can maintain the tan indefinitely. Keep in mind many over the counter products, exercise, skin conditions and hormones may create uneven post-tan fading. Always use products recommended by your soL deL souL technician that aid in keeping your skin hydrated and your tan looking flawless.
What is the advantage of a sunless tan instead of a UV tan?
Spray tanning does not have the potential to give you melanoma, wrinkles, age spots, moles, freckles, or sunspots. It is the safest way to look tan without the damaging effects of UVA/UVB rays. It is great for those with sensitive skin or for those that do not tan easily.
Is Airbrush Tanning safe?
YES! According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the most effective products available are sunless or self-tanning products that contain Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as the active ingredient. DHA has been used in cosmetic preparations for almost 30 years and was listed with the FDA in 1973. It is declared safe and suitable for use in cosmetics and drugs used to color the skin. DHA is derived from glycerin (vegetable origin), which is a commonly used cosmetic and food ingredient.
What is the difference between being airbrushed and using cream or lotion sunless tanners at home?
While creams and lotions are great for touch ups, the application can be messy and difficult for those hard-to-reach places. A professional spray tan artist mists your entire body at every angle while paying attention to spraying lighter in areas that naturally look lighter (like the inside of the arms or armpits) and darker in areas to contour (like the thighs and abs).
Will an Airbrush Tan stain my pajamas or sheets?
While your tan develops your airbrushed tan does contain a cosmetic bronzer that will stain some fabrics (for example: nylon, silk, wool and polyester). However, a good soaking in water will usually lift the stain from the fabric and is water soluble. Most fabrics and materials are completely safe. It is suggested to lay down a towel or old sheet before sitting on car seats, couches, beds or anything you wish to protect.
Should I shave before or after my Airbrush Tan application?
Shaving is a form of exfoliation so you should shave about 24 hours before the application. Shaving after will take off some of your tan, so shave before. After your application, be sure to use a new razor as old dull blades can create streaks.
Should I remove any deodorant?
Yes. For best results do not wear deodorant to your appointment or remove with soap and water before. It can turn your armpit green. No one wants green pits!
I like my Airbrush Tan just the way it is — how do I keep it?
Make sure you moisturize every day with an approved lotion. All lotions are not created equal when it comes to your spray tan. Many contain alcohol that will dry the skin and cause a faster fade.
Can I choose how tan I want to be?
Yes. Your soL deL souL tanning expert will consult with you about your desired color and evaluate your skin type. Your solution will be a custom mixed blend to achieve your desired color for a natural looking tan.
Can I tan when pregnant or nursing?
We recommend all clients get permission from their physician first. DHA has been used as a cosmetic ingredient in the United States since 1960 and no problems have ever been reported concerning DHA penetrating the skin. The FDA recommends avoiding exposure to mucous membranes, inhalation and ingestion.
What should I wear?
The tanning solution contains a cosmetic bronzer so black or dark clothing is suggested. A maxi dress, loose pants and shirt are required. Clothes that are too tight can rub in places causing the tan to lighten in that area. Cotton is the best material for post tan wear. It is recommended by FDA to cover all mucus membrane therefore underwear is suggested. Remember that whatever area is covered will not be tanned.
